I was watching instastories the other day and one story caught my attention. In this particular story, the topic of discussion was “Do you trust all of your good friends?” This took me back to the numerous times I have had to answer “I do not trust you but that has nothing to do with you because I do not even trust myself” anytime I was asked a question about trust.
Trusting someone can be very complicated sometimes. We decide to fully trust someone because we assume, they have our best interest at heart or we realize that there is a certain level of compatibility because we share similar interests, beliefs and values. Additionally, it is important to consider the fact that we tend to trust someone because we assume that we know people and can thus predict certain actions but is this really enough reason to fully trust someone?
Human beings change and become unpredictable. It can be so easy to admit to yourself that you are not the same person you were five years ago, however, you have certain values and beliefs that are never going to change. To you, these values and beliefs make you trustworthy. On the other hand, we have to consider the possibility that we are different people. The person you were yesterday is not the person you are today and is not going to be the person you are tomorrow because as humans we tend to assess and reassess the little things that make us who are we. However, do these changes in behaviour make us untrustworthy?
Before I end this I have one question for people who feel they can trust their friends, however, trust them with certain aspects of their lives. How does that work? I admit there are certain things I can easily tell one of my close friends and not tell others because I feel like the level of understanding might be different. In this case, are you fully trusting if you are unsure about certain character traits? Do you make it known to your friends that you trust them with a particular aspect of your life or you do not trust them at all?
I guess I am just curious…
